Are Escape Rooms Safe? What Players Should Know (Orlando Guide)
When people hear the term escape room, a common question comes up immediately:
“Are we actually locked in?”
The short answer is no — and modern escape rooms are far safer than many people realize.
At Lockbusters Escape Game, safety has always been part of our design philosophy. From how our rooms are built, to how puzzles function, to how guests move through the space, every detail is planned with guest safety in mind.
You Are Never Locked In
Early escape rooms were built around the idea of being “locked” in a room. That concept no longer applies. Due to U.S. safety regulations, modern escape rooms operate on a mission-based model, not a locked-room model.
At Lockbusters:
- The front door is always unlocked
- You can leave the game at any time
- You are never trapped inside a room
The goal is to complete a mission — not to escape confinement.
Emergency Exits & Modern Building Codes
Our venue was not grandfathered in, meaning when Lockbusters was built, we were required to meet current safety regulations, not outdated ones.
This includes:
- Clearly marked emergency exits
- Full ADA compliance
- Accessible exit routes throughout the venue
Even guests using wheelchairs can safely exit the building without barriers.
ADA Accessibility & Inclusive Game Design
Accessibility was not an afterthought — it was built into the games themselves. At Lockbusters, you will find:
- No climbing required
- No crawling spaces
- No stairs inside game rooms
- No physical strength needed
We made this decision intentionally. While some escape rooms use ladders, crawl tunnels, or staircase transitions, we chose not to include them. Even if an alternate route existed, it could make certain guests feel left out. Our goal is for everyone in the group to experience the full game together.
Fire Safety & Fire-Resistant Materials
Fire safety is taken extremely seriously. Our venue includes:
- Sprinklers throughout the entire building
- Fire-retardant construction materials
- Fire alarm sensors directly tied to the fire department
During construction, the system was accidentally triggered before test mode was enabled. The fire department arrived in under 4 minutes — a response time that gives us tremendous peace of mind.
Electrical Safety & Low-Voltage Systems
All of our puzzles use low-voltage systems, designed specifically for guest interaction.
Additionally:
- Safety shutoff devices are installed
- Systems automatically power down in case of over-voltage
This prevents equipment damage and eliminates fire risk. Electronics are designed for reliability and safety, not shortcuts.
Staff Monitoring & Real-Time Communication
Every game at Lockbusters is actively monitored.
- Each group has a dedicated Game Master
- Gameplay is observed in real time
- Guests can ask questions at any point
Inside each room, microphoned communication is available. Simply wave, and staff can see you immediately. Help is provided when needed, without breaking immersion — you are never alone or unsupervised.
No Climbing, No Force, No Physical Risk
Escape rooms should challenge your mind, not your body. At Lockbusters, there is:
- No climbing
- No jumping
- No heavy lifting
- No force-based puzzles
Some puzzles involve moving objects, but never with strength or physical risk. Everything is designed to be safe for children, seniors, and guests of all physical abilities.
Kid-Safe, Bulletproof Prop Design
We often host families, school groups, and younger players — so durability matters.
Our props are:
- Made from semi-rigid rubber
- Designed to never shatter
- Impossible to create sharp edges
- Safe if dropped or handled roughly
These materials are far safer than plastic or wood, eliminating the risk of cuts or accidental breakage.
Why Private Escape Rooms Are Safer
Another major safety factor is privacy. At Lockbusters, all games are 100% private.
This means:
- You only play with people you know
- No unpredictable behavior from strangers
- A more controlled, comfortable environment
Choosing private escape rooms in Orlando is especially important for families, corporate teams, and guests who want a relaxed, stress-free experience.
Alcohol Policy & Guest Well-Being
Alcohol is not permitted inside Lockbusters Escape Game. While our venue is directly connected to Epic Axe Throwing, and guests may enjoy cocktails there, drinks are never allowed inside the escape rooms themselves.
In the past, late-night hours occasionally led to guests arriving overly intoxicated. To protect everyone’s safety and experience, operating hours were adjusted, and our last games now start no later than 11:00 PM. This ensures every guest enjoys the games safely and responsibly.
Escape Rooms Are Safe — When Designed Correctly
When built and operated responsibly, escape rooms are one of the safest group activities available. At Lockbusters Escape Game, safety includes open exits, ADA accessibility, fire protection, electrical safeguards, constant staff supervision, private gameplay, and kid-safe materials.
These strict standards are part of why Lockbusters is frequently listed among the best escape rooms in Orlando.
