When I first discovered escape rooms, I was hooked — not just as a player, but as a creator. I opened my first two escape rooms in South Carolina in 2015 and 2016, learning firsthand how to design games that entertain, challenge, and fully immerse players.
In 2017, I took everything I learned and brought it to Orlando with the launch of Lockbusters Escape Game, with one clear goal: to create escape rooms in Orlando that truly stand out.
A Vision Beyond “Gen 1” Escape Rooms
My vision was different from the start. I didn’t want to open just another escape room filled with padlocks and basic puzzles.
Many early “Gen 1” escape rooms relied heavily on locks and minimal theming. At Lockbusters Escape Game, we chose a different path. From day one, our focus has been on immersive environments, cinematic set design, and original, smart puzzles that surprise players at every turn.
This design philosophy doesn’t just create fun for couples and families — it also makes Lockbusters one of the best escape rooms in Orlando for team building and group events. When coworkers, friends, or students step into one of our games, communication and collaboration become essential.
Building Our Escape Games First — Not Just Fitting a Space
Many escape room businesses rent a space and then try to fit games around existing walls. We did the opposite.
When we signed the lease for our Orlando location in 2016, we immediately began a full demolition. We designed our escape games first, then worked with an architect to build the space around them. Every room, hallway, and transition was planned to serve the experience — not limit it.
This approach is a big reason our escape rooms near International Drive feel immersive and purpose-built rather than retrofitted.
Signature Props and Unforgettable Player Reactions
Some of our most iconic features came from this commitment to immersion. Inside Lockbusters Escape Game, you’ll find a full-size armored truck and a real Vietnam-era Huey helicopter.
We had to drive the armored truck into the building before any walls were constructed — then build the rooms around it.
Guests often ask: “How did you get the truck inside?”
We like to joke that we used a crane — but the truth is even better: we drove it in.
These aren’t just decorations. They’re fully interactive parts of the escape room experience, allowing players to climb inside and solve puzzles within the environment itself.
Learning, Upgrading, and Innovating Escape Room Design
As our games became more advanced, so did our standards.
Early on, wear and tear from enthusiastic players showed us where improvements were needed. I took specialized classes to learn mold-making and material design, eventually developing the ability to produce durable, high-quality props in-house.
Today, we:
- Design props in 3D
- Print prototypes
- Create silicone molds
- Cast final pieces in semi-rigid rubber
This material is far more durable than plastic, allowing players to interact freely without damaging game elements.
We also upgraded our electronics. While many escape rooms use inexpensive relays prone to failure, we installed industrial-grade commercial relays commonly used in factories. The result is exceptional reliability and smoother gameplay.
